Willow Creek: Paso Robles’ coolest sub-region

Willow Creek District showcases the premium side of Paso Robles. This sub-appellation sits on the west side of the Paso Robles AVA, providing more exposure to the Pacific, and relatively cooler weather. Brianne Cohen shares her top wines from the Paso Robles sub AVA.

Established in 1983, Paso Robles, meaning ‘pass of the oaks’ in Spanish, is a Californian region with 16,500 hectares under vine.

Ten years ago, 11 sub-American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) within the greater Paso Robles AVA were approved for use on labels. Conjunctive labelling laws, which have seen success in Napa Valley, require ‘Paso Robles’ to be used on a label whenever a sub-AVA is also listed.
